There has been a demand to have a fourth line between Egmore and Beach railway stations and this might become true now. Now, funds have been allotted by the railway ministry for taking up the work.
The fourth line between Chennai Egmore to Beach would cover a distance of 4.3km and this was mentioned by Mr P. Mahesh, divisional manager of southern railways.
The long-distance express or freight trains from Tambaram towards Arakkonam or Gummidipoondi are being operated in a single line now (due to absence of the fourth line) and these get halted at various stations before reaching the beach. This issue could be prevented with the help of the 4th line.
To proceed to Coimbatore, Mumbai and Gummidipoondi towards AP etc, many trains now use Chennai Egmore or Beach. Therefore, the southern railways are now showing huge interest in the fourth line. It was then pointed out by an official that Chennai Central has been saturated and no new trains could be added due to the lack of space.
He explained that to reduce congestion at Chennai Central station it has been proposed to shift a few trains to Tambaram. By this, Egmore station would also be decongested. The survey work of the fourth line would be done first by the southern railways first and it would be completed in 6 months. Truth is lay of rail tracks would not take long. It is important to note that the 4th line would go up to Royapuram and along the route, the state authorities would have to remove a large number of encroachments.
