The price of onions in Chennai has skyrocketed to great heights in recent times is well known. Some onion traders have even imported onions from far away countries like Egypt etc and it grabbed the attention of many.
For the last 2 days, more truckloads of onions reached Koyambedu wholesale market. This has to lead to a reduction in the price of onions now. On Thursday,19th December, in the neighborhood and retail shops in Chennai, premium quality onions were sold at Rs 120 per kilogram and Rs 50 was the lowest price of the onions.
According to Mr. V.R. Soundarajan, Koyambedu wholesale onion traders association president, the number of trucks with onions from states like AP and Maharashtra has gone up as traders have harvested fresh yield. He added that in the past just 30 truckloads of onions were coming into the market every day and now the Koyambedu market is receiving as many as 50 truckloads.
It must be taken into account that each truckload has 20 tonnes of onions and it included 2 or 3 trucks with onions imported from Egypt also. The domestic yield would improve in the coming days and as a result of that the onion prices would come down even further.
It is important to note that the quality of onions reaching the market is better now but the demand for the onions has reduced. Information is many customers including hoteliers have cut down on the purchase of the onions.
In the Koyambedu wholesale market, the cost of the onions from Maharashtra was Rs 100 per kg and the cost of onions from AP was Rs 80 per kg. It must be noted that shallots were sold at a cost of Rs 160 per kg. The potato was sold at a cost of Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kilogram as the cost of potato has increased by Rs 10 in the retail market. A vendor mentioned about how it was the season for other vegetables like beans, carrot, beets, peas, etc.
Information gathered is in Koyambedu retail market carrot was sold at Rs 50 per kg, beetroot at Rs 45 per kg, brad beans at Rs 40 per kg, brinjal at Rs 30 per kg, chow- chow at Rs 25 per kg, tomato at Rs 20 per kg. It must be noted that the cost of drumstick continued to be Rs 350 per kilogram.
