One of the 4 major water reservoirs for the Chennai Metro City, the Puzhal water reservoir has touched 2 TMC. This is after a gap of 3 years!
The inflow of water to this Puzhal Lake depends on the quantum of rains received in the various water resources in the district of Thiruvallur. The stagnated water from Cholavaram lake will also be directed to Puzhal lake.
Further, the water released from Andhra Kandaleru dam (Krishna river) will be collected at Poondi lake and then directed to Puzhal lake.
During the excessive rain in the year 2015, the Puzhal lake reached its full capacity. However, in the subsequent years, with the failure of the monsoon seasonal rains, there was no sufficient inflow of water to Puzhal lake and the lake went dry.
Even the sporadic rainfall was so little that the capacity of the lake in this period was only 1 TMC.
In this scenario, after a gap of 3 years, Puzhal lake, at present; has realised its full capacity of 2 TMC.
The Krishna river water from the Andhra Kandaluru dam has come up to 3 TMC to Tamil Nadu. As this water is diverted to the Puzhal lake, it has realised the capacity of 2 TMC.
The present inflow to Puzhal lake is 460 cft per second.
To meet the demands of the drinking water requirement of the Chennai Metro City, water is taken from Puzhal Lake at 89 cft per second.
Still, the Puzhal lake is still to touch its full capacity level of 3300 million cft. Now it is up to 62% capacity.
The present capacity is 2054 million cft.
If the rains during the Tamil calendar month of Kartigai are up to their full potential, then there are prospects of the Puzhal lake filling to its full capacity!
The expectation from the public is that this will happen thus resolving the water shortage issue of not only the Chennai Metro City but also its nearby districts!
