New name rule in TN, students, and parents worried

Posted on: 22/Nov/2019 9:54:27 AM
There are many students in TN with long names and with two or more initials. These students are now facing an issue. The information is state government has set a limit of 34 characters (in English) on the online portal EMIS or Educational Management Information System. It must be noted that the students upload their details for class 10 board examinations on this portal only.

An advisory has been sent by TNDGE or Tamil Nadu Directorate of Government Examinations to all chief educational officers on 15th November. Information is Tamil version of the names should not exceed 54 characters. The details of class 10 students were uploaded on the EMIS portal by the CEOs and school headmasters and these students appear for board examinations in April-May 2020.

For making corrections in the names of the students, date of birth, religion, category/medium of instruction, etc, 29th November has been set as the deadline.

It is known that many government ID cards are being issued based on class 10 marks certificates. Point is if the correct details are not given now then the student has to put up with his/her name being wrongly spelled. Students in TN do not use their surnames and there is no uniform practice in filling up the application forms also.

It must be taken into account that some students put initials after their full names whereas others use initials either in front of their names or in the middle etc. According to the TNDGE circular, it is clear that the name must be first and then the initials with one empty space in between. The initials must be in Tamil while filling the Tamil version and this has been creating issues for the students and schools.

It must be noted that in August the TN government made aadhaar mandatory for uploading details in the EMIS portal. The point here is aadhaar cards of the students with 2 initials carry their father’s names after their names thereby making their full names lengthy.  Information got is when schools tried to link the aadhaar details of these students with the EMIS portal then it exceeded the character limit recently imposed by the government. For the purpose of changing the names of these kids, their parents are now going to local notary offices.

It has been revealed by official data that every month on an average of 200 parents applies for the name change for various reasons.
