As the inflow of produce has increased this week, the prices of vegetables and flowers have come down at Koyambedu wholesale market after a week.
Due to the pooja festival, the prices have been high for the past few weeks.
P Sukumaran, secretary, Vegetable, Flower and Fruits Merchants Association observed in this regard:
The vegetable price has reduced by up to 10 to 15 percent as the supply of vegetables has increased by 35 percent. Currently, tomato is being sold for Rs 25-30 per kg, onions for Rs 35-40 per kg, carrots for Rs 30-35, brinjal at Rs 15-25, beans for Rs 2540 and broad beans for Rs 25-40 per kg. We are expecting a price hike by 10 percent from October 15, as the muhurtham (auspicious dates for conducting marriages) season starts.
Apart from the fruits and vegetables, flower traders at the market also saw a fall in prices
S Mookaiya, Secretary, Koyambedu Malar Podhu Vyabarigal Sangam explained in this regard:
For the last one week, the prices have been double the normal due to high demand. Though the supply doesnt meet the demand still, the festival season has ended. Now, jasmine is being sold for Rs 150-180 per kg, Jasminum sambac for Rs 120-160 per kg, rose for Rs 30-40, frangipani (sambangi) for Rs 60-75 and pink jasmine (jadi malli) for Rs 90-120. For Deepavali, the prices might increase.
