Absence of security at the metro stations in Chennai is now a cause for concern

Posted on: 25/Jun/2019 10:05:41 AM
With the opening of 45 km phase-1 network in the month of February in 2019, the number of people using metro trains in Chennai has increased is known. The point is the patronage has gone up to nearly 42 percent and that is superb.

The shocking information now is the commuters using metro trains in Chennai are unhappy regarding the security at the metro stations. There are complaints that many metro stations do not have enough security personnel or the existing security staffs are careless in their work. It should be taken into account that metro station at Vadapalani located on the busy 100 feet road does not have enough security for the commuters as the security checks are not carried out strictly.

A frequent commuter from Vadapalani expressed his thoughts and spoke about how the baggage scanner staffs do not do their work properly as they are not available during the scanning. It is said that the baggage scanner staffs are not available at the early hours around 5 am in the morning. He then hinted about how passengers were not frisked in some metro stations.

An average of 3500 commuters use Vadapalani metro every day and in the afternoon time when the footfall is low the commuters were not frisked. By this, many anti-social elements could take advantage and could create issues. This was pointed out by a regular commuter at the Shenoy Nagar station. Important information collected is CMRL has outsourced staffs for operations at the metro stations like baggage checks, frisking of commuters etc.

From an average 19.36 lakh in the month of January, the patronage went up to 23.62 lakh in the month of February. This was after the inauguration of last leg of phase-1 from Washermanpet to AG-DMS. The amazing information is on 26th April 2019 the patronage touched one lakh.

It is revealed that the CMRL has adopted many safety steps such as installation of CCTV cameras, employing  armed police personnel at the entry points, platform staffs etc. Point is since the patronage has been increasing, the security measures adopted by CMRL would not be enough to ensure the safety of the increasing commuters.
