Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha has said that 25000 families that have been affected by the recent floods will be resettled soon. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ms. Jayalalitha said that these families will be moved to newly built tenements by the slum clearance board. I expect the resettlement of these people to commence within two weeks and for it to be completed in phases within a year, she has said.

According to a survey, around 50000 families in Chennai have been living along the banks of the rivers Adyar and Cooum, and the Buckingham Canal. 25,000 families live along the other water bodies and water courses in the city. The SCB (Slum Clearance Board) has built 50000 multi storied tenements on government land. In her letter, Ms. Jayalalitha has also asked Mr. Modi to sanction Rs. 5,000 crore as a special scheme to construct houses for the poor in the urban areas.
