Skyrocketing Flower Price in Chennai

Posted on: 30/Nov/2015 1:03:02 PM
As heavy showers have begun yet again, production of flowers is hugely affected which has impacted in increase in price of the same.

Flowers are brought to Koyambedu market in Chennai from other states including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and others. Sellers from Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and other districts source flowers from this market.

Before the period of Diwali, a kg of jasmine flower priced Rs 150. Crossandra was priced Rs 150 per kg. Following this, as there have been heavy showers across Tamil Nadu, the total volume of flowers received at the Koyambedu market has reduced since 18th of this month.

A cubit of flower was priced Rs 50. On Sunday, the price of one kg of jasmine was Rs 850, Mullai Rs 700, and Crossandra Rs 900.

Earlier, in November, a cubit of jamine flower was priced between Rs 20 and Rs 25. The same is now priced Rs 50.

Speaking to retailers at the Koyambedu market, Arul Viswasam said the market used to receive 400 tonnes of flowers in 22 lorries until 8th of last month. Production in these flower farms have got badly affected and hence the market receives just 170 to 200 tonnes of flowers.

However, as devotees have started heading to Sabarimala and there are continuous Muhurtham dates back to back, the demand for flowers has largely surged. The production however is not enough to meet the demand. This has now resulted in increase in price.

  • Crossandra – Rs 900
