More pollution monitoring stations to come up in the State

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has announced that it will add 25 ambient air quality monitoring stations to its already existing network across the State. It has also said that the data will be available online for public viewing. According to an official, Already the public can see Chennai data on the Air Quality Index of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The manual readings from stations in Chennai are available on the TNPCB website.

The new technology will help monitor as well as analyse pollutants in the air. These include carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, ammonia and particulate matter of 2.5 and 10 micron sizes. The station will use meteorological conditions to obtain the data. These include wind direction, wind speed, vertical wind speed, barometric pressure, ambient temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and rainfall monitor. 

All these will be recorded in 21 towns and cities in the State. According to the announcement, there will be 2 stations each in Vellore, Kancheepuram, Trichy and Cuddalore, and 1 station each in Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Pudukottai, Coimbatore, Karur, Salem, Ariyalur, Tirunelveli, Namakkal, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Tahnjavur, Ooty, Tiruppur and Krishnagiri. 

The TNPCB has called for tenders from those manufacturers who may have experience in installing, maintaining, monitoring and uploading the data. The tenders are for a period of 5 years. At present, the TNPCB has 10 monitoring stations in and around Chennai itself. These monitor pollution in 3 locations in Coimbatore, 3 locations in Tuticorin, 4 locations in Madurai and 3 locations in Salem.
