Have the students lost their interest to join an MBBS course now in Tamil Nadu?
Truth is that the eligible students now are not showing enough interest to pursue MBBS in the state of TN. This has taken many by surprise.
The deadline for MBBS counselling has ended on 30th September 2023 but still there are as many as 83 MBBS seats lying vacant with no takers. Out of the total 83 seats, as many as 16 are in the government run medical colleges and 3 in AIIMS in Madurai. The top medical colleges in TN like Omandurar Medical College and Stanley Medical College or SMCH in Chennai and top medical colleges in Coimbatore and Madurai would have many vacant MBBS seats.
Even in the last academic year, as many as 6 MBBS seats, one each in popular MMC and SMCH did not have any takers. This was as per NMC or National Medical Council.
It is brought to light that the vacancies (inspite of huge demand for the MBBS seats in the govt colleges in TN) have been due to the flawed policy of NMC. It is a known fact that NMC has the policy of not surrendering the vacant MBBS seats even after the fourth and the last rounds of counselling. These MBBS seats would go unfilled unless NMC or the govt move to SC for extension of the deadline for counselling or even another round of counselling etc.
It was explained by an official from MCC or Medical Counselling Committee that as per the order from Supreme Court or SC seats are not returned to the state govt or deemed universities etc. He spoke about how after making it clear that the students would be debarred if they do not join the allotted MBBS seats, the vacancies have reduced but not stopped completely.
