Pride of TN, Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanyakumari gets more visitors now

If you have been to Kanyakumari then you would not have missed the statue of Thiruvalluvar there. This statue stands tall above everything else at a height of 133 ft is known. There has been more number of visitors coming to see this amazing statue and it is now said that the increased footfalls have turned the focus on the safety of the visitors plus on the amenities.

It is important to note that this statue of Thiruvalluvar is located adjoining Vivekananda Rock Memorial off the coast of Kanyakumari. The information is the number of tourists visiting this statue is increasing by about 1 lakh annually.

During the 2017-18, this Thiruvalluvar statue made of granite received over 21.67 lakh visitors and in 2016-17 over 20.65 lakhs of tourists visited this amazing statue. This also included people from foreign countries etc.

Poompuhar Shipping Corporation or PSC that has been operating ferry service from the shores to the Thiruvallur statue would purchase 2 more ferries of capacity of 150 passengers and 75 passengers for the Kanyakumari ferry service. Point to be noted is it would cost and amount of Rs 6.08 crores including GST. The proposal to buy two more ferries has been approved by the ADB or Asian Development Bank. This ADB is scrutinising the tenders is known. Three ferries namely M.L. Guhan, M.L. Podhigai and M.L. Vivekanandha are operated now by the PSC.

There are also plans to extend the length of the berth at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial jetty by 54 m with financial support from the central government. It would cost an amount of Rs 20 crores and it would be executed under Sagarmala programme.

It is said that Poompuhar Shipping Corporation would bear 50% of the cost. The information got is corporation has already approved its share of Rs 10 crores for the project and Tamil Nadu Maritime Board would execute the project.

To serve as the added attraction for the tourists, there is a proposal to install rope car facility from shore to the statue and this was informed by the tourism minister, Mr. Natarajan.  It is known that on 1st January 2000, the Thiruvallur statue was unveiled and the statue is located about 400 m from the coast. The statue was sculpted by Mr. V. Ganapati Sthapati is known. Information gathered is ferry service from the mainland to Vivekananda Rock memorial stops at this Thiruvalluvar statue for few minutes.
