Fourth Railway Line Project Between Tambaram and Chengalpattu to Begin in January 2026

Posted on: 19/Dec/2025 2:21:06 PM

Work on the long-awaited fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu is set to commence in January 2026, marking a major boost for suburban rail services in southern Tamil Nadu. The project involves the expansion of railway tracks over a 30-kilometre stretch at an estimated cost of ₹713 crore.

The additional line is considered crucial due to the rapid growth of private colleges, industrial establishments and the operationalisation of the Kilambakkam integrated bus terminus along this corridor. With Tambaram emerging as the third terminal of the Chennai suburban rail network and Chengalpattu serving as the southern gateway, the project is expected to significantly enhance passenger capacity and service frequency.

Land acquisition challenges are expected to be minimal, as only three hectares out of the required 30 hectares involve private land, while the remaining area belongs to the Railways and the government.

Once completed, the fourth line will support train speeds of up to 160 kmph, improving operational efficiency and reducing travel time. The project is expected to ease congestion, improve connectivity and cater to the growing commuter demand in the rapidly developing Tambaram-Chengalpattu corridor.
