Signal Infrastructure Approved for Poonamallee-Porur Metro Corridor

The Railway Board has granted approval for the signalling infrastructure for the Poonamallee-Porur Metro Rail corridor, clearing a major hurdle for the launch of services under Chennai Metro Rail Phase II.

Chennai Metro’s Phase II project spans 116.1 km and will feature driverless metro train operations. Construction is currently underway along the 26-km Lighthouse-Poonamallee stretch, which forms a key part of the expansion.

As part of Phase II, the Poonamallee-Porur Junction section, covering about 10 km, is set to become the first corridor to be opened for public use. Metro authorities have intensified work on this stretch, and three successful trial runs of driverless trains have already been conducted.

With the signalling system now approved, officials plan to commence train operations on this corridor from January. By the end of February, services are expected to be extended beyond Porur up to Vadapalani.

Since station construction between Porur and Vadapalani is yet to be completed, this extension will be implemented as a temporary operational arrangement until full infrastructure readiness is achieved.
