The long-pending Avadi–Guduvanchery broad gauge railway line via Sriperumbudur, sanctioned in 2013, has moved a step forward with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) now finalized.
According to Southern Railway, the work on the DPR was awarded to Primerail Infralabs, Bengaluru. The project will be completed in three years once construction begins.
In Phase I (Guduvanchery–Sriperumbudur–Irungattukottai), the line will cover 33.78 km at an estimated cost of ₹945 crore. The overall project cost from Avadi to Guduvanchery is estimated at ₹3,136 crore.
The railway line requires 300 hectares of land acquisition, costing around ₹702 crore, which will be equally shared by the Indian Railways and the Tamil Nadu government.
As per the DPR, the alignment will include 11 major bridges, 83 minor bridges, 16 road-under-bridges, and 56 level crossings. Stations are planned at Avadi, Vayalanallur, Thirumazhisai Thandalam, Sriperumbudur, Vallakkottai, Oragadam, Nattarasanpettai, and Guduvanchery.
Designed for a maximum speed of 160 km/hr, the line is expected to significantly improve both passenger and freight movement, particularly with the upcoming Parandur Airport, located about 45 minutes from Sriperumbudur.
The DPR projects an annual traffic of 43.51 lakh passengers, with expected gross earnings of ₹27.86 crore and net earnings of ₹22.98 crore.
Residents in Avadi, Sriperumbudur, and surrounding areas have welcomed the move, stating that the project, pending for years, will accelerate growth and provide much-needed rail connectivity.
