The much-awaited opening of the Adambakkam MRTS station has been delayed again, leaving commuters disappointed as Southern Railway officials confirmed that passenger operations may not begin anytime soon.

Although the Velachery–St Thomas Mount MRTS extension was officially commissioned in March 2026, trains continue to pass through Adambakkam station without stopping. Railway authorities stated that several technical rectification works and internal approval procedures are still under progress.

The main issue reportedly involves the large gap between train coaches and the platform caused by the curved track alignment near the station. Southern Railway engineers are currently evaluating multiple solutions, including platform extension and track correction works.

At present, around 86 MRTS services operate daily between Chennai Beach and St Thomas Mount, but Adambakkam remains the only incomplete stop on the newly extended route.

Residents and daily commuters in Adambakkam have expressed frustration as nearby Puzhuthivakkam station is already operational while Adambakkam station remains shut despite construction being mostly completed.

The Velachery–St Thomas Mount MRTS extension project was originally proposed in 2008 and took nearly 18 years to complete due to land acquisition delays and construction hurdles.
