In a major public welfare initiative, the Chennai Metro Water Board is set to install free water ATMs across high-traffic areas in the city to provide safe drinking water to the public, especially benefiting daily wage workers and commuters.
As part of Phase 1, 50 water vending machines will be deployed in key locations such as beaches, parks, temples, bus depots, terminals, and markets. Each machine will be linked to a 3,000-litre tank, monitored via CCTV, and connected to the metro water supply network to ensure uninterrupted water access. Users can choose between 150 ml and 1 litre of purified water.
Initial zones like Teynampet and Kodambakkam have already identified 5 to 6 locations each, with plans underway to expand to Manali. Suggested locations include MMD Park (Mattur), Loop Road (Pattinapakkam), Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Vadapalani Bus Stand, and Koyambedu Market.
The Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to inaugurate the initiative soon. Officials note that while the project is widely appreciated, consistent maintenance will be key to its success. A second phase will see the addition of another 50 water ATMs.
