The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for four districts in Tamil Nadu, warning of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms on Saturday, May 16.

According to the weather department, districts including Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai and Theni are likely to receive heavy rain with thunder and lightning due to the prevailing deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. A deep depression prevailing over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal is continuing to influence weather conditions across Tamil Nadu and coastal regions.

Several parts of south Tamil Nadu, delta districts, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to receive moderate rainfall with thunderstorms. Weather officials said cloudy skies and pleasant temperatures are likely to continue over the coming days.

In Chennai and suburban areas, the sky is expected to remain cloudy with chances of moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in a few places.

The weather department has also issued a yellow alert for Dindigul, Theni, Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts for Sunday, May 17, where heavy rain with thunderstorms is expected in isolated locations.

Rainfall Recorded Across Tamil Nadu

During the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM on Friday, the highest rainfall of 30 mm was recorded in Manamelkudi in Pudukottai district. Other areas including Courtallam, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Tenkasi, Nagapattinam, Nilgiris, and Kanyakumari also recorded moderate rainfall.

Fishermen Warning Issued

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph are likely over coastal Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjoining Kumari Sea region from May 17 to May 19.
