From 5th June, green cover will increase in Chennai through planting of 1lakh saplings by the Chennai Corporation!!

Tree planting activities would be given more preference by the Chennai Corporation from 5th of June. By this, Chennai could have more green cover.

With 426sqkm area, Chennai has about 21lakh21thousand families residing. It has a population of about 80 lakhs. Every day, about 15lakhs of people come to Chennai.  It is learnt that according to the guidelines of Union Ministry of Environment and Forest 33.3 percent of total land area in Chennai must be covered with green cover. In other words, Chennai with an area of 426sqkm must have a green cover of 33percent or 144sqkm.

The report taken in 2021 by the forest dept pointed out that Chennai has got green cover of only 5.28percent or 22.70sqkm. Compared to metro cities like Bengaluru with a green cover of 6.81%, Delhi with 12.61%, Hyderabad with 12.9%, Mumbai with 25.4%, Chennai has got a lower green cover of 5.28% only.

Now, efforts are being taken to increase the green cover in Chennai city to 33.3percent. It has been revealed by Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran, Chennai Corporation Commissioner that to increase the green cover in Chennai planting of saplings has started in the vacant spaces in the cemeteries of the corporation. In the Mylapore crematorium, planting of 500 saplings has started now. At the crematorium in Manali, 250 saplings have been planted

From 5th June (World Environment Day) onwards intense sapling planting works would take place in Chennai. In this regard, a detailed plan is being prepared now.
