What is the latest from CMRL about the operation of driverless trains in Chennai?

To manufacture an additional 10 driverless metro trains, CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited has signed an agreement with Alstom. This would be carried out in the second phase. Now, metro trains are being used by many to reach their destinations in Chennai is known.

In Chennai, the second phase metro rail projects of 116.1km are being implemented on 3 routes. It is now said that after the completion of work along these 3routes CMRL would be taking up the running of 138 driverless trains. Each metro train would have 3 coaches. On 17th November, a contract was signed by CMRL with Alstom transport India to construct 26 metro trains with 3 driverless coaches.

On the 27th of November, CMRL signed an agreement with Alstom Transport India for manufacture of additional 10 metro trains for an amount of Rs 269 crores. Persons who signed the agreement were Mr. Rajesh Chaturvedi, MD of CMRL and Mr. Rajeev Joisar, commercial director, Alstom transport India. According to the above agreement, as many as 108 metro coaches would be manufactured and supplied to CMRL.

Under this contract or agreement, design, manufacturing, testing plus certification for running quality metro trains, training for the employees, supply of spare parts etc would be covered. It must be noted that under the agreement metro trains would be handed over to CMRL within 28 months.

Information gathered is that at the workshop that is being built at Poonamallee metro trains would be maintained and operated.
