Chennai Metro Rail Extension: Govt Sanctions ₹2,126 Crore for Poonamallee–Sunguvarchathram Work

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned ₹2,126 crore to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for preparatory works on the Metro extension from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchathram. This stretch forms the first phase of the proposed link to the upcoming Parandur airport.

According to the government order issued by the Department of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives:

- ₹1,836 crore will be used for land acquisition.

- ₹252 crore will go towards road works, surveys, geotechnical studies, barricading, tree cutting and replanting, signage, environmental safety, and traffic management.

Metro Extension Plan

- The Metro extension from Poonamallee to Parandur is planned in two phases for a total length of 52.94 km.

- Phase 1: Poonamallee to Sunguvarchathram (27.9 km) – estimated cost ₹8,779 crore.

- Phase 2: Sunguvarchathram to Parandur.

To reduce cost and time, a 5.892 km stretch of the Metro will be integrated with the proposed elevated corridor by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) between Poonamallee and Sriperumbudur.

Proposed Stations (Phase 1)

Chembarambakkam, Tirumazhisai, Chettipedu Pappanchathiram, SIPCOT Irungattukottai, Pennalur Substation, Sriperumbudur, Pattunool Chatram, Mambakkam, Tirumangalam, and Sunguvarchathram.

Other Ongoing Metro Projects

- Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam – ₹1,964 crore sanctioned.
- Koyambedu to Pattabiram – ₹2,442 crore sanctioned.
