New Rules Simplify FASTag Acquisition from February 1

Posted on: 02/Jan/2026 5:10:34 PM

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced new rules that will simplify the process of obtaining FASTag, effective February 1. Under the revised rules, the KYV (Know Your Vehicle) procedure will no longer be mandatory for light motor vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans.

The NHAI stated that the change aims to reduce delays and difficulties caused by the KYV verification process. Vehicles that have already obtained FASTag will not require KYV verification.

According to the NHAI, "KYV will now be mandatory only in cases where FASTags have been incorrectly issued to vehicle owners. The procedure will be required only if there are complaints or irregularities."

Under the new rules:

- New FASTags must be activated only after verifying vehicle details in the VAHAN database.

Confirmation of FASTag activation in the database will no longer be required.

- For vehicles not listed in the VAHAN database, banks can activate FASTag after verifying the RC book.

- FASTags purchased online must also have vehicle details verified in the VAHAN database.

The NHAI says the revised process will make obtaining FASTag much simpler and more convenient for vehicle owners.
