Margazhi Month: Dos and Don’ts for Devotion and Well-being

Posted on: 15/Dec/2025 4:10:21 PM

Margazhi, one of the most sacred months in the Tamil calendar, is often misunderstood as inauspicious. On the contrary, it is a month dedicated entirely to spiritual practice, devotion, and personal well-being. Lord Krishna himself emphasizes the sanctity of this period, making it ideal for prayer, chanting, and reflection.

Things to Avoid in Margazhi

- Sleeping late: Early mornings are considered highly auspicious. Waking up before sunrise and bathing enhances physical and spiritual energy.
- Planting seeds: Margazhi is not meant for sowing as seeds may not grow properly according to traditional beliefs.
- Night-time Kolam: Drawing Kolam at night is discouraged, as it is considered a ritual for righteousness during daytime.
- Major ceremonies: Weddings or other celebrations are often postponed because the month is primarily for devotion.

Recommended Practices

- Early morning bathing and prayer: Start the day with a ritual bath and chant Lord Vishnu’s names.
- Tiruppavai and Thiruvempavai recitation: Read or listen to Andal’s Tiruppavai and Shiva’s Thiruvempavai every day.
- Participate in bhajans and devotional gatherings: Joining community prayers or temple activities enhances spiritual merit.
- Special observances: Celebrate Vaikunta Ekadashi, Arudra Darshan, and other auspicious days during Margazhi. - Focus on devotion and charity: Spend time in self-reflection, reading scriptures, and helping others.
