Chennai Metro to Develop ₹400 Crore Commercial Hub at Thirumangalam

The Chennai Metro Rail project is set to take another major step in the city`s infrastructure development with plans to build a ₹400-crore commercial hub at Thirumangalam. Construction is expected to begin in September, following the completion of the tendering process.

The project is part of Chennai Metro Phase II and aims to transform Thirumangalam into a major transport and commercial destination. The area will become an important interchange, connecting the existing underground metro station from Phase I with the new elevated station being built under Phase II.

To make travel more convenient, a dedicated pedestrian walkway will connect the two stations, allowing passengers to move easily between them. Detailed design work for the connectivity features is currently in progress.

Key Part of Metro Phase II

The Thirumangalam station will be located on Corridor 5 of Chennai Metro Phase II, which stretches from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. The corridor is approximately 47 kilometres long and will pass through several important localities, including Villivakkam, Anna Nagar West, Koyambedu, Virugambakkam, Ramapuram, Chennai Trade Centre, Madipakkam, Kovilambakkam, Perumbakkam, and finally Sholinganallur.

The route will include both underground and elevated sections.

Four Towers Planned

The commercial development will come up on approximately 3.85 acres of land adjacent to the new elevated Thirumangalam Metro station.

The project includes the construction of four commercial towers featuring shopping spaces and office facilities.

One of the project`s most distinctive features is its design, where metro trains will pass directly through the second tower, creating a unique architectural landmark. All four towers will also be connected directly to the metro station through a skywalk, providing seamless access for commuters and visitors.

Construction Timeline

According to officials, the project`s design has already been finalized, and the contract is expected to be awarded shortly. Construction is scheduled to begin in September, with the entire development expected to be completed within 30 months from the date the contract is awarded.

Once completed, the commercial hub is expected to strengthen Thirumangalam`s role as a key business and transportation centre while improving connectivity and creating new commercial opportunities in the area.
