Posted on: 19/Nov/2025 9:22:23 AM

A low-pressure system that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka has moved westward and is now positioned over the Gulf of Mannar. The system is expected to further move in a west-northwest direction, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

With the northeast monsoon strengthening, widespread rain was recorded across Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall continued overnight in several northern districts. The highest rainfall was recorded in Vedaranyam at 170 mm, followed by Tirunelveli (140 mm) and Nagapattinam (130 mm).

Despite rainfall, temperatures in The Nilgiris and Salem have risen 3°C to 5°C above normal.

More heavy rain is expected today in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts. The same conditions are likely to prevail tomorrow. On November 21, eight districts are expected to receive heavy rain, while 11 districts may experience heavy rainfall on November 22 as another low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal.

In Chennai, the sky will remain cloudy with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder in some parts of the city.

Meanwhile, strong winds reaching up to 60 kmph are expected along the south Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and Kanyakumari sea area.

Fishermen are strictly advised not to venture into the sea.
