Chennai Metrowater is set to begin its long-awaited smart meter installation project, aiming to modernize the city’s water supply and improve efficiency. The initiative will start next month with the installation of one lakh smart meters across the city.
The new meters will enable real-time tracking of water usage, help detect leaks quickly, and allow consumers to receive digital water bills directly on their mobile phones, ensuring greater transparency.
In the first phase, bulk consumers will be prioritized, receiving monthly usage updates through the system. Chennai currently has 14 lakh consumers, but only 8 lakh pay water charges regularly, making the upgrade crucial for better revenue collection.
The project, costing ₹5 crore, is being implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The concessionaire will conduct surveys, procure the meters, and handle installations. Field inspections are expected to begin soon, with installations planned for the next quarter.
Under HAM, 40% of the investment will be repaid to the concessionaire over 15 years. The project is expected to significantly improve Chennai’s water management and enhance service delivery for residents.
