Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Heavy Rain Alert Issued for 5 Districts, Chennai May Receive Moderate Rain

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu as heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected over the next few days. The weather system is likely to bring widespread rainfall across many parts of the state between May 21 and May 26.

According to the latest weather update, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode and Dindigul districts may receive heavy rain at isolated places on Thursday. The rains are expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

Chennai Weather Forecast

Chennai and surrounding suburban areas are also likely to receive light to moderate rainfall with cloudy weather conditions. The city has been experiencing high temperatures and humidity over the past few days, and the expected rainfall may bring temporary relief from the summer heat.

Heavy Rain Alert for Friday

The weather department has further warned that districts including Salem, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Tiruchy, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Tirupattur, Erode, Nilgiris and Kanyakumari may witness heavy rain on Friday (May 22).

Residents living in low-lying areas are advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain.

Fishermen Warning Issued

Strong winds with speeds between 60 kmph and 65 kmph are expected over the Gulf of Mannar, South Tamil Nadu coastal areas and parts of the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

Tamil Nadu Continues to Record High Temperatures

Even as rain activity increases, several districts in Tamil Nadu continue to experience severe heat. Chennai Meenambakkam recorded one of the highest temperatures in the state at 107.6°F, while Vellore and Tiruttani also reported temperatures above 106°F.

The weather department has urged the public to stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the afternoon sun and follow official weather advisories regularly.
