Centre Raises Queries on Chennai Metro’s Three Extension Projects
The Centre’s Institute of Urban Transport has raised queries on three proposed extension projects of Chennai Metro Rail, delaying final approvals.
The projects under scrutiny include the Airport–Kilambakkam corridor, Poonamallee–Sunguvarchathiram extension, and the Koyambedu–Pattabiram stretch. While CMRL has already initiated preliminary works for all three projects, clearance from the Centre is still awaited.
According to sources, the Institute of Urban Transport has sought clarifications on housing categories along the corridors, overall project viability, integration with existing transport systems, and compliance with *Make in India* norms. Due to these queries, approvals are expected to take between six and twelve months.
In the meantime, CMRL has kept land acquisition orders ready. Utility shifting works are also planned to commence once the State government releases the required funds, ensuring that groundwork progresses while Central approval is pending.
