Officials from 16 states visited Chennai to see the facility to locate and rectify power failure problem in any place in Chennai city from anywhere in the city.
A special training was conducted for officials from 16 states in India which are lagging in the field of application of GIS & GPS technology to be linked with power distribution equipment.
Several technology applications are being introduced in the state of Tamil Nadu under the Central Government (R-APDRP) Restructured Accelerated Power Development & Reforms Programme.
A SCADA information system is being installed in Tamil Nadu linking Electrical Power substations with the latest technology and the Power distribution system.
Based on the statistics taken in 2001, this facility is being installed in cities with a population of more than 4,00,000 such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchy, Thirunelveli, and Tirupur.
60% work has been completed in the installation SACADA information at TANGEDCO; headquarters Office Complex. It is planned to activate this facility before the end of this year.
This project was started in 2008. The centre will facilitate linking of all substations, power distribution centres, and distribution transformers by using GPS & GIS technology. Wherever & whenever there is a break in power supply in any location, this can be seen in the centre’s display. Rectification activities can be initiated immediately for speedy restoration of power.
Central Government’s Power Finance Corporation funded this project with Rs. 182 Crores. As the project has slowed down and lagging behind schedule, there was a report that this funding may be stopped. Following this caution, activities are being expedite by Tamil Nadu Power department for early completion of this project.
The states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala and Pondicherry were very much lagging behind on this project.
Officials from 16 states were deputed to Chennai and trained on the project by Officials from TANGEDCO.
TANGEDCO,s activity schedules, SCADA centre development work, information on power distribution systems, the system for paying ‘on-line’ electricity bills, they system for power failure rectification were all explained in this training.
