Officials consultation on tackling drinking water shortage

Summer has already started scorching even before start of ‘Agni Nakshatram’ (the most severe part of summer). This has led to severe drinking water shortage at several places.
A high-level meeting was conducted at the Fort under the Chief Secretary, Mr. Mohan Verghese, to discuss the methods to tackle this shortage.
Tamil Nadu requires 1900 trillion cubic feet (tcft) of water for its industries, electricity power plants, drinking water, and cattle. However, only 1,600 tcmft is available. There is a shortage of 300 tcft already. This is likely to increase further.
This issue was discussed during the meeting. Ground water level has gone down from 600’ to 800’ in many areas. Deep bore wells cannot be sunk in these areas. Water has to be supplied through tankers or lorries. Water storage tanks may be constructed. Deep pipe-wells have to be sunk in some areas. Awareness programmes must be conducted to make the people know more about the importance of saving water. It also decided to speed up the projects of expanding water sources.
