Construction of Chennai’s first-ever cable-stayed bridge is set to begin soon as part of the ambitious Chennai Port–Maduravoyal Elevated Expressway project. The new bridge will be built near Napier Bridge, forming a key section of the 20-km double-decker corridor under the Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme.
According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the project also includes two additional cable-stayed bridges — one at Koyambedu and another at Maduravoyal. Each bridge will span 300 metres, with long spans of 75 metres each. The cost of all three bridges is estimated at ₹180 crore.
Near Napier Bridge, the elevated corridor will cross onto Swami Sivananda Salai with a single pier, while the ramp will pass through Island Grounds. Piling work for this section is expected to commence shortly.
In Koyambedu, the corridor will pass over the Chennai Metro Rail, and at Maduravoyal, it will rise above the existing grade separator. The project, targeted for completion by February 2027, has already seen 30% of the piling work completed, with 4,842 piles planned in total.
The corridor, executed under the Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) mode, was officially contracted on September 11, 2023, with the work order issued on November 23, 2023.
Divided into four packages, the expressway will feature 9,425 components being cast at two separate yards. One tier will have six exits and seven entry points, while the other will serve as a direct link between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal, streamlining freight movement and easing city traffic congestion.
