Rs 2,000 Banknote Update: How and Where to Exchange or Deposit Notes; Complete List of RBI Issue Offices

More than three years after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 banknote from circulation, the currency continues to remain legal tender. Although most of these notes have already been returned to the banking system, the RBI has clarified that anyone still holding Rs 2,000 notes can continue to deposit or exchange them through its designated Issue Offices.

RBI`s Latest Update on Rs 2,000 Banknotes

According to the latest data released by the RBI, the withdrawal process is nearly complete. When the central bank announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 denomination in May 2023, the total value of these notes in circulation stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore.

As of April 30, 2026, the value of Rs 2,000 banknotes still in circulation has fallen to just Rs 5,451 crore. This means that 98.47% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes have already been returned to the banking system.

The figures indicate that only a small portion of the denomination remains with the public.

How to Deposit or Exchange Rs 2,000 Banknotes

People who still possess Rs 2,000 banknotes can continue to exchange or deposit them through the RBI`s 19 designated Issue Offices across India.

Individuals can visit any of these offices to:

Can`t Visit an RBI Office? Use India Post

People who are unable to visit an RBI Issue Office in person can still complete the process through India Post.

Customers can send their Rs 2,000 banknotes from any post office in the country to the nearest RBI Issue Office. After the notes are received and verified, the corresponding amount will be credited directly to the sender`s registered bank account.

This facility is especially useful for people living in remote areas or those who cannot travel to an RBI office.

Rs 2,000 Banknote Continues to Be Legal Tender

The RBI has once again clarified that the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 banknote does not amount to demonetisation. The denomination continues to be legal tender and remains valid under Indian law.

However, since the note has been withdrawn from active circulation, people are encouraged to deposit or exchange any remaining Rs 2,000 banknotes through the RBI`s authorised channelsls.

The central bank has also advised the public to rely only on official RBI communication for information related to the exchange or deposit process and to avoid misinformation regarding the validity of the currency.
