The temple is believed to be highly powerful for devotees seeking blessings related to health, peace, and prosperity.

The spiritual atmosphere, ancient temple architecture, and traditional pooja rituals make Marundeeswarar Temple one of the must-visit temples in Chennai.

Darshan Details

Darshan at the temple is completely free for all devotees. Visitors are advised to wear decent traditional or modest outfits while entering the temple premises.

During weekdays, devotees can usually complete darshan within 10 to 15 minutes. On weekends, the waiting time may increase to around 20 to 30 minutes. During major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and Pradosham, devotees may have to wait for 1 to 2 hours because of the huge crowd.

History of Marundeeswarar Temple

According to temple legends, Sage Vasishta was performing intense penance and worship of Lord Shiva. Lord Indra sent the divine cow Kamadhenu to assist the sage by providing milk for pooja rituals. One day, Kamadhenu delayed in bringing the milk, which angered Sage Vasishta. In his anger, the sage cursed Kamadhenu to lose her divine powers and live as an ordinary cow.

Seeking forgiveness, Kamadhenu prayed sincerely to Lord Shiva at this sacred place. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Shiva removed the curse and restored her divinity.

Another legend says that Sage Valmiki unknowingly pressed his feet on the Shiva Lingam while worshipping. Frightened by the incident, Kamadhenu ran away. Devotees believe the hoof mark of Kamadhenu is still visible on the Shiva Lingam inside the temple.

The deity came to be known as Marundeeswarar because Lord Shiva is believed to have offered divine medicine and healing blessings to sages and devotees here.
