New Korukkupet RoB to Ease Congestion in North Chennai

Posted on: 11/Feb/2026 3:04:03 PM

The newly constructed Korukkupet Rail Overbridge (RoB) in North Chennai is set to bring major relief to daily commuters by reducing long wait times at the railway level crossing. The project, inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, replaces the old Korukkupet Level Crossing No. 2B, which frequently caused traffic congestion and delays of up to 30 minutes.

Built at an estimated cost of ₹96 crore, the 840-metre-long overbridge includes a 72-metre railway span and service roads on both sides to ensure smoother vehicle movement. The project was executed under a 50:50 cost-sharing partnership between Southern Railway and the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).

The new RoB is expected to significantly improve connectivity for residents of Korukkupet, Tondiarpet, and surrounding North Chennai areas, benefiting school students, office-goers, and local businesses. In addition, the foundation stone has been laid for another rail overbridge at the adjacent Level Crossing No. 2A, estimated to cost around ₹75 crore, further enhancing traffic infrastructure in the region.

The Korukkupet RoB marks a key step in strengthening urban infrastructure and easing congestion in North Chennai.
