As Valentine’s Day approaches, the Tamil film industry is revisiting romance by bringing back popular love classics from the late 1990s and early 2000s to the big screen. Following the successful re-releases of Minnale and Mounam Pesiyadhe, the 1999 romantic drama Kadhalar Dhinam is now scheduled to return to theatres after 27 years.
The makers have unveiled a new poster confirming that the film, starring the late Kunal and Sonali Bendre, will re-release on February 14. Directed by Kathir and produced by AM Rathnam under the Sri Surya Movies banner, the film marked Sonali Bendre’s debut in Tamil cinema. The supporting cast includes Nassar, Manivannan, Goundamani, and Chinni Jayanth.
Kadhalar Dhinam revolves around Raja (Kunal) and Roja (Sonali Bendre), who fall in love through online conversations. However, their relationship faces challenges when Raja learns that Roja belongs to a wealthy family and is the daughter of a college chairman. The film went on to become a major box-office success and remains a favourite among audiences, especially for its timeless soundtrack composed by AR Rahman.
In addition to its Tamil release, the film was also released in Telugu as Premikula Roju. A Hindi version, Dil Hi Dil Mein, which was largely dubbed with some reshot portions, was released later in 2000.
