Chennai Metro to Launch Subsidiary for Connecting Vehicle Services
With metro trains gaining popularity as a safe, fast, and comfortable mode of transport, Chennai Metro Rail is witnessing over 3 lakh daily passengers across its two operational lines covering 54 km.
To further improve last-mile connectivity, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has planned to introduce enhanced connecting vehicle services once the Phase 2 Metro Rail project is completed. Recognizing that city buses and minibuses alone may not be sufficient to handle the rising passenger load, CMRL has decided to establish a separate subsidiary dedicated to operating connecting vehicles.
According to CMRL officials, the State Transport Commission has already been approached for approval. Once clearance is obtained, around 500 vehicles – including taxis, autos, and vans – will be operated on a contractual basis. Additionally, 150 hybrid vehicles will be procured in the first phase of the initiative.
Officials emphasized that strengthening connecting vehicle facilities is crucial to increasing metro ridership and ensuring smooth, seamless travel for passengers.
