Posted on: 01/Sep/2025 9:24:09 AM

From the next academic year, 2026-27 onwards, NIOS or National Institute of Open Schooling would launch Tamil medium for class 11 and class 12 students with the aim of attracting more dropouts from the TN schools. It is known that NIOS has been offering Tamil medium for classes 9 and 10 already.

As per the regional director of NIOS, Chennai, Mr. V. Santhanam NIOS wanted to extend Tamil medium to classes 11 and 12 also. To cover all groups preferred by the students from TN, 20 to 25 subjects would be translated to Tamil. At present, NIOS offers as many as 44 subjects including 11 languages for senior secondary students. Important piece of information is that the board has got the equivalence for class 10 and 12 from the TN government.

In Tamil Nadu and in Pondicherry, enrolment of the students for class 10 and class 12 exams have increased to 11000. He spoke about how offering senior secondary in Tamil medium would attract more rural students towards NIOS.

Advantages of NIOS for the students:

It is learnt that NIOS conducts board exams twice a year for the students and it offers on-demand exams to the learners. Truth is that the students could choose subjects according to their own interest. The students would be able to appear for one language and 4 subjects or 2 languages and 3 subjects. Sportspersons would be able to clear the board examination as NIOS would launch subjects related to sports.

It is worth mentioning here that NIOS in association with TN Physical Education and Sports University would be offering yoga, food science, sports management for secondary and yogic sciences and sports management etc.

Diploma courses for farmers:

There is no age for learning. It is learnt that farmers in the field of livestock and poultry farming would be able to do vocational courses and diploma courses etc as NIOS has joined hands with TANUVAS or Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University. This would enhance the skilled manpower and livelihood opportunities of the farmers. This was mentioned by the chairman of NIOS Mr. Akilesh Mishra.
