Retteri Lake is now making sensational news for this reason!!
For the purpose of storing additional water plus to make it as a tourist destination, desilting works are being undertaken now at the popular Retteri Lake in Chennai.
It is worth mentioning here that at the Retteri Lake desilting works and constructing strong banks, constructing regulators to discharge excess rainwater during rainy season and constructing 4 earthen embankments in the middle of the lake for birds are being carried out now.
An amount of Rs 43.19 cr would be spent for these works. For desilting works sake, encroachments that were present at one side of Retteri Lake`s catchment areas like Puzhal, MGR Nagar, Subramaniam Nagar, Secretariat Colony etc were removed. Point is that works are going on now to construct strong banks and a retaining wall at that location. The case regarding the encroachment removal work at Nehru Nagar is pending in the High Court. The verdict would decide about the construction of the retaining wall for the remaining area.
Here, the work has been completed regarding setting up of a regulator to discharge excess water. It is learnt that a structure is being constructed now along the Madhavaram-Puzhal GND Road to drain the lake completely. Similarly, works are at the completion stage regarding deepening the upper part of the lake, increasing the lake`s capacity plus using the soil obtained from the lake to create 4 earthen embankments.
Point to be noted is that the waste soil present at the bottom portion of this lake is being removed now. Strengthening of banks of Puzhal Aeri present in Govt warehouse and in Pammadhukulam etc. Other works like work regarding repairing footpaths on the bank of the lake and erecting barricades are also going to be completed soon. It is said that all the developmental works would be completed by the coming monsoon season.
Information gathered is that after the desilting works get over the Madhavaram-Retteri lake storage capacity would be increased from 32 million cubic feet to 45 million cubic feet.
