Chennai Allocates Rs 1,341 Crore for Climate Projects, Focus on Flood Prevention

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has allocated ₹1,341.2 crore for climate-related projects in its 2025–26 climate budget, with flood mitigation and water management receiving the largest share.
Key works include construction of over 240 km of stormwater drains, restoration of lakes and ponds, sponge parks, and rainwater harvesting to reduce flooding and improve water security. Waste management and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure are also part of the plan.
The climate budget supports Chennai’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, while prioritising protection from flooding, heat, and water scarcity
