Tamil Nadu to Take Full Control of Chennai MRTS; Modernisation Plan Underway

Posted on: 10/Dec/2025 11:23:11 AM

The Tamil Nadu government is set to acquire the remaining 33% stake in the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Indian Railways for an estimated Rs 600-700 crore, bringing the entire system under state control. This move is expected to facilitate seamless integration with Chennai Metro Rail Ltd, enhancing the city’s urban transport network.

In parallel, the state government is seeking Rs 4,000 crore in funding from the World Bank to modernise the 25-kilometre MRTS corridor, stretching from Chennai Beach to St. Thomas Mount. The modernisation plan includes the introduction of new coaches, upgraded stations, escalators, and better last-mile connectivity for commuters.

Officials have stated that the initiative aims to transform the ageing MRTS corridor into a fully Metro-style system by 2027, offering passengers a more comfortable, efficient, and reliable commuting experience.

With these steps, Tamil Nadu is positioning itself to create a unified, modern rapid transit system in Chennai, addressing growing urban transport demands and improving connectivity across the city.
