Road Accident Fatalities Down 10% in Chennai in 2025: GCTP

Posted on: 23/Dec/2025 4:53:56 PM

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has reported a 10% reduction in road accident fatalities across Chennai in 2025 compared to the same period last year.

According to official data, 469 fatalities were recorded on city roads till December 15 this year, down from 519 deaths reported during the corresponding period in 2024.

In a significant improvement, grievous injury cases due to road accidents dropped sharply by 66%. While 2,093 grievous hurt cases were reported in 2024, the number fell to 721 in 2025.

GCTP attributed the decline to intensified enforcement, increased patrolling, and sustained awareness campaigns promoting road discipline and the use of protective gear. The police also conducted training programmes for personnel using technological approaches, along with safety education sessions for schoolchildren, bus drivers, and delivery agents.

To strengthen enforcement, the traffic police booked more cases related to speeding, drunken driving, and helmet violations through manual checks and advanced systems such as ANPR cameras, speed radar systems, and vehicle interceptors. Coordination with other departments to improve road conditions, signage, and lighting at accident-prone locations has also played a key role.

GCTP stated that reducing road accidents and ensuring public safety will remain its top priority in the coming years.
