North Chennai Thermal Power Station Restores Power After Technical Fault Shuts Down 630 MW Stage-I Units

All three 210 MW generating units of the North Chennai Thermal Power Station (Stage-I) resumed operations on Wednesday after a technical fault caused a temporary shutdown, disrupting power supply to thousands of consumers in parts of North Chennai for nearly three hours.

The shutdown occurred at around 6 a.m., affecting electricity supply in Manali, Athipattu, Gummidipoondi, and nearby areas. Emergency restoration work began immediately after the fault was detected, and power supply was restored in phases. Normal electricity service resumed by around 10 a.m.

According to a senior official from the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL), the fault was first detected in Unit-I. As a precautionary measure, the remaining two 210 MW units were also taken offline to prevent the issue from spreading, resulting in the temporary shutdown of the entire 630 MW Stage-I power station.

The official said the generating units were brought back online within three hours, restoring normal power generation. Engineers are currently conducting a detailed technical assessment to determine the exact cause of the fault.

Officials confirmed that all three units are now operating normally and the power station has resumed full-scale electricity generation.
