Margazhi Month Begins with Tiruppavai Devotion in Chennai
Today marks the first day of Margazhi, a sacred month in Tamil tradition dedicated to worship and devotion. Referred to as the Saivar or Devar month, Margazhi is considered ideal for spiritual practices, temple visits, and chanting hymns in praise of the divine.
During this month, Tiruppavai hymns composed by Andal are recited in Vishnu and Saiva temples across the city. Devotees participate in:
- Ritual processions - Street chanting - Conch blowing after each hymn
In major temples, the usual Suprabhatam is replaced with Tiruppavai, creating a spiritually immersive atmosphere.

Celebrating Lord Narayana, Krishna as Nandagopan, and his consorts, the opening hymn calls devotees to come together, seek blessings, and partake in the spiritual practices of Margazhi.
