How to Change the Ownership of a Two-Wheeler Online
Transferring the ownership of a two-wheeler is a mandatory legal process that officially changes the vehicle’s ownership from one person to another. This can be done either by visiting the Regional Transport Office (RTO) or online through the Government of India’s Parivahan portal.
Failure to complete the ownership transfer after selling or purchasing a vehicle may attract penalties, as changing the name in the Registration Certificate (RC) is compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Documents Required for Ownership Transfer
To initiate the ownership transfer, the following documents are required:
- Original Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle
- Address proof and photo ID of the existing owner (Aadhaar / Passport / Voter ID)
- Address proof and photo ID of the new owner
- Valid motor insurance policy
- Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
- Sale documents – Form 29 and Form 30
- Death certificate of the registered owner and legal heir certificate (if applicable)
Online Ownership Transfer Process (Parivahan Portal)
The ownership transfer can be completed online through the Parivahan website by following these steps:
1. Visit the official Parivahan portal: parivahan.gov.in
2. Select Vehicle Related Services and choose Transfer of Ownership
3. Select the concerned State and RTO
4. Fill in the required details and upload the necessary documents
5. Pay the applicable fees online
6. Submit the application
Once the application is verified, the updated RC will be issued in the new owner’s name.
Offline Ownership Transfer Process (RTO)
For those opting for the offline method:
- Visit the respective RTO with all required documents
- Submit duly filled Forms 29, 30 (and Forms 31 or 32, if applicable)
- The vehicle may be inspected by RTO officials
- After verification, the new Registration Certificate will be dispatched to the new owner’s address
Important Points to Note
- The ownership transfer application must be submitted within 30 days of the vehicle sale
- Driving a vehicle without transferring ownership can attract a fine of up to ₹2,000
- Both the seller and the buyer must cooperate and participate in the transfer process
Timely ownership transfer not only avoids legal complications but also ensures that liability and responsibility for the vehicle are correctly assigned to the new owner.
