Rs 5,000 Fine for Littering at Marina and Chennai Beaches: GCC Issues Strict Warning
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a ₹5,000 fine for anyone found littering or dumping garbage at Marina Beach and other major beaches across Chennai. The penalty will be imposed under the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016, which strictly prohibit dumping of plastic, food waste, and general garbage in public and coastal areas.
With the Pongal festival expected to attract large crowds to city beaches, the GCC has intensified its cleanliness drive by deploying beach-cleaning machines and sanitation workers on a daily basis. Despite clearing around four metric tonnes of waste every day, officials say public non-cooperation continues to hinder efforts to maintain clean beaches.
To ensure strict compliance during the festive season, Public Address (PA) systems will be installed across all major beaches, and enforcement will be tightened from Ennore to Uthandi, according to GCC Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran.
