Chennai Metro Water Plans Bio-CNG Production from Sewage Sludge; Feasibility Study Underway

In a major step toward sustainable waste management and renewable energy generation, the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board has announced plans to conduct a feasibility study for producing Bio-CNG from sewage sludge generated at its treatment plants across Chennai.

The initiative aims to convert wastewater sludge into clean, renewable fuel, supporting both environmental sustainability and revenue generation for the utility body.

Detailed Feasibility Report to Be Prepared

The Metro Water Board has decided to appoint a consultant to prepare a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR). The study will evaluate:

- Technical viability of converting sewage sludge into methane-rich biogas

- Upgrading biogas into Bio-CNG for commercial use

- Financial sustainability and revenue models

- Public-Private Partnership (PPP) opportunities

- Infrastructure requirements for production and distribution

The study will cover major sewage treatment plants located in Kodungaiyur, Koyambedu, Nesapakkam, and Perungudi.

Promoting Waste-to-Energy Solutions in Chennai

Currently, biogas generated at certain sewage treatment facilities is used for electricity generation. With this new proposal, Chennai Metro Water plans to scale up energy recovery efforts by producing Bio-CNG, which can be:

- Bottled and sold commercially

- Supplied through pipeline networks

- Used as green fuel for vehicles

This move aligns with India’s broader renewable energy goals and circular economy initiatives.
