Good news for Chennai commuters! Metro rail services between Vadapalani and Poonamallee are expected to commence by February, following the final approval granted by the Indian Railway Board, according to official sources.
Project Update
- The Vadapalani–Poonamallee stretch is part of Chennai Metro Rail Limited Phase 2 expansion
- This section covers 16 km, which has now been fully completed
- Trial runs and system inspections have been successfully conducted
- Safety certification has been obtained, clearing the way for passenger services
Chennai Metro Phase 2 Corridor
Under Phase 2, the third metro corridor is being developed from Marina Beach Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass, covering a total distance of 26 km. The Vadapalani–Poonamallee portion is the first segment to be readied for operations.
Driverless Metro in Future
Initially, metro trains on this route will operate with drivers. At a later stage, the corridor is planned to transition to driverless metro train operations, marking a major technological milestone for Chennai Metro.
Improved Connectivity
Once operational, this route will significantly improve connectivity between western Chennai suburbs and the city, reduce travel time, and ease traffic congestion on major roads.
