Bengaluru - Chennai Expressway: Major Stretches in Tamil Nadu to Be Ready by Mid-2026

Posted on: 12/Jan/2026 10:46:29 AM

Work on the four-lane, access-controlled Bengaluru - Chennai greenfield expressway in Tamil Nadu is nearing completion, except for the Arakkonam–Kancheepuram stretch. Authorities expect the remaining sections to be ready by June or July this year.

The 105.75-km Tamil Nadu portion is being executed in four packages. The Gudipala–Walajahpet stretch (24 km) is almost complete, while the Walajahpet–Arakkonam section (24.5 km) is awaiting completion of a rail overbridge. The Kancheepuram–Sriperumbudur stretch (31.7 km) has also seen substantial progress. However, the Arakkonam–Kancheepuram section (25.5 km) continues to face delays, with limited work completed so far due to contractor-related issues and legal hurdles.

In parallel, construction of a trumpet interchange at Sriperumbudur is progressing well. The interchange, designed to provide seamless connectivity from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Vellore, is partially complete and is expected to be finished later this year.

Once the expressway is fully operational, travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai is expected to reduce significantly, easing traffic congestion on the existing national highway and improving inter-state connectivity.
