The construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai has reached 42% completion as of November 30, according to Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav. The AIIMS Madurai campus is being developed at Thoppur near Madurai, spanning an area of 220 acres.
The project was first announced in February 2015, and the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2019. Construction work officially commenced on May 22, 2024, and is being carried out in two phases.
In the first phase, key facilities including the academic block, outpatient (OPD) services, student hostels for boys and girls, and essential service buildings are being constructed. The work is progressing at full pace, round the clock. AIIMS authorities have earlier expressed confidence that the hospital could be opened for public use by Pongal 2026.
The Union Minister has now confirmed that October 2026 has been set as the target date for completing the entire hospital project. He added that construction is being carried out in line with global standards, with a strong focus on sustainability and long-term infrastructure quality.
Officials also stated that efforts are underway to begin medical classes and outpatient services from the upcoming academic year. At present, the AIIMS Madurai Medical College is functioning from the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College campus until the Thoppur campus becomes operational.
