ITR Filing Deadline Extended to September 15, 2025
The government has extended the last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) to September 15, 2025. This extension applies to individuals and taxpayers who do not need an audit. The delay is due to recent changes in ITR forms and filing tools.
If you miss this deadline, you can still file a belated return by December 31, 2025, but with a late fee ₹5,000 for incomes above ₹5 lakh and ₹1,000 for incomes below ₹5 lakh. Additional interest (1% per month) will also be charged on unpaid taxes. Also, missing the deadline means you can’t carry forward certain losses like business or stock-related losses.
