CMRL to Beautify Iconic Broken Bridge and Two Other Key Locations in Chennai
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to beautify three major locations in Chennai, including the iconic Broken Bridge in Adyar. According to officials, tenders for the project will be awarded within two weeks, covering a total area of over 29,000 square metres.
The beautification plan includes:
- Broken Bridge, Adyar – 14,120 sqm
- Below MRTS Line near Indira Nagar Railway Station – 6,176 sqm
- Below Velachery Rail Overbridge – 9,270 sqm
CMRL Director (Projects), T Archunan, stated that technical bids were opened last week, followed by financial bids this week. The beautification work will proceed based on a detailed feasibility study and project report.
The Broken Bridge area is planned to be transformed into a major waterfront destination promoting health, wellness, and tourism. Key features include:
- Adventure and leisure zones
- Integrated health and mobility loop
- Beachfront cafés, seating, walkways, and landscaping
- Public amenities and utility upgrades
- Environmental and sustainable design elements
- Inclusive access and designated parking
For the Indira Nagar MRTS underbridge, the proposal integrates infrastructure with recreation, retail, and cultural spaces, including:
- Walkways and accessibility features
- Play areas for children
- F\&B outlets and event spaces
- Parking and essential public facilities
The Velachery rail overbridge will be developed into a vibrant civic hub, inspired by Kathipara Urban Square. Plans include:
- Festival market zone
- Pedestrian and cyclist pathways
- Enhanced lighting and organised parking
- Visually appealing public space
These projects aim to revitalise underutilised urban spaces while boosting community interaction, tourism, and local economy.
